Interview
Tracy Hamlin [April 23rd 2006]

Tracy Hamlin has just released her first solo album called “Seasons”. I am pleased to have been able to interview her for Just Soul.

Tracey: Have you written/co written any songs on your album “Seasons”?
Tracy Hamlin: Yes, I wrote two songs (Again, Been There, Done That) and I co-wrote two songs (Seasons and Because I am Special). I am very excited to have finally completed my first solo effort. It took about a year and a half from start to finish. I financed it myself. I am so blessed to have worked with so many awesome musicians, songwriters and producers. I thank the LORD for such a golden opportunity.

Tracey: How would you describe your style of music?
Tracy Hamlin: Adult Contemporary. I was able to record songs from my heart. That includes a little Gospel, R&B, Pop, and Smooth Jazz.

Tracey: Growing up as a child, who were your vocal influences?
Tracy Hamlin: My greatest influence was Renee Diggs from Starpoint. I also listened to Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, and Stephanie Mills.

Interview

Tracey: What would you say is your best characteristic?
Tracy Hamlin: Showing and making the people that I love feel very special.

Tracey: Have you supported any acts and if so who?
Tracy Hamlin: I support many of local and independent artists.

Tracey: You haven’t always been solo and used to be in a group called “Pieces Of A Dream”. Can you tell us a little bit about that time and how long were you in the group?
Tracy Hamlin: I was with POD for 3 years. It was a great experience that allowed me to travel around the world, perform for a more diverse audience, and continue to perfect my craft.

Tracey: our music has taken you to other countries. Can you please name me the countries it has taken you to?
Tracy Hamlin: Japan, Africa, England, Mexico and many Caribbean Islands such as St. Lucia, Turks and Caicos, Guadeloupe, Barbados, Bermuda, Bahamas, and St. Croix in the Virgin Islands.

Tracey: Any plans to perform in the UK?
Tracy Hamlin: Not immediate, but we are working on it.

Tracey: Please describe yourself as a person – who is Tracy Hamlin?
Tracy Hamlin: I love the LORD! I am a happy, strong and confident woman that has survived many storms. I am very sensitive when it comes to the wants and needs of others. I am very family- oriented. I enjoy life! I love to laugh and I enjoy people with a great sense of humour. I really love teaching children and helping aspiring vocalists reach their goals.

Tracey: You are fortunate to be able to sing in other languages such as French, German and Italian. How did you come about learning theses languages and do you have plans to record albums in any of those languages in the future?
Tracy Hamlin: I received 5 years of classical training in voice. Learning to sing in other languages was part of my curriculum. I can sing in different languages but I do not speak these languages. The technique involved in classical training has helped me tremendously as a vocalist. However, I do not plan to record albums in other languages.

Tracey: Do you remember your first boyfriend and are you in a relationship now?
Tracy Hamlin: Too personal. Sorry, but I am not interested in sharing.

Tracey: Can you describe the first time you heard your voice on TV or the Radio?
Tracy Hamlin: he first time I heard my voice on the radio was a very proud moment for me. It was something I always dreamed about but I never thought it was within my reach. I was very proud of my accomplishment.

Tracey: Which types of venues are you currently playing at and where do you aspire to play at?
Tracy Hamlin: I play in jazz clubs, arenas, and jazz festivals. I aspire to play anywhere that my God- given gifts can be used to touch others.

Tracey: Are you a calm, relaxed person, or are there things, which tend to keep you awake at night?
Tracy Hamlin: I have been described by others as a calm enthusiastic person. I think I am a happy person that can be reserved and sometimes silly, especially when I am with children. I love my life. God has blessed me abundantly! I thoroughly enjoy my blessings and try not to take them for granted. Sometimes the excitement of so many wonderful things happening in my life keeps me awake at night.

Tracey: What was the last CD you purchased and which type of music do you enjoy listening to the most?
Tracy Hamlin: The last CD I purchased was Floetry’s new CD. I like all kinds of music. However, I particularly like female vocalists. I am always looking to learn something new from my peers.

Tracey: Do you play any instruments? If so, which?
Tracy Hamlin: Yes, I play the piano.

Tracey: Where were you born and raised?
Tracy Hamlin: I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tracey: Are you currently living in America? If so, which part of America?
Tracy Hamlin: I still live in Maryland.

Tracey: Just soul is attracting people to it’s site from around the world, from the UK, Switzerland, Africa, Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Bosnia, to name but a few. Can you please tell me what you think of Just Soul?
Tracy Hamlin: I love Just Soul! Just Soul is unique and provides people with information about independent artists (like myself) that are hard to come by. Much of the music that I listen to is from independent artists. Just Soul keeps me informed of the independent artists that I am eager to know more about. Great concept! Keep up the Great work!

Tracey: On behalf of Just Soul, I thank you for kind words and for completing this interview and wish you every success in your solo career. It is always a pleasure for me to support Independent artists.
Tracy Hamlin: Tracey Cope and Matthew Daniel. Thank you so much for showing interest in my project and in me as an artist. I am very grateful for Just Soul for providing an opportunity for me to be exposed to a broader audience. I wish you much success in following your heart and your dreams. Thank you so much. God Bless, Tracy.
